Best Places to See Cherry Blossoms in South Korea

Cherry blossoms are not only in one area in South Korea. There are actually a lot of areas that have cherry blossoms. Here are some of my favorite locations in South Korea to see cherry blossoms bloom.

Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Located in Jinhae-gu, Changwon City, this festival is one of the most famous cherry blossom festivals in South Korea. Visitors can wander through Yeojwacheon Stream and Gyeonghwa Station, where the cherry blossoms create breathtaking tunnels of pink and white.

Yeouido Cherry Blossom Festival

Yeouido, an island in the Han River, hosts a magnificent cherry blossom festival every spring. Visitors can stroll along Yeouiseo-ro Road and enjoy the stunning cherry blossoms, along with various cultural events and performances.

Jeju Island

While famous for its natural beauty, Jeju Island also boasts cherry blossoms during the spring season. Visitors can find cherry blossom trees in various locations across the island, including Jeju City and Hallim Park. Cherry blossoms tend to bloom a little bit earlier on Jeju than mainland South Korea.

When is the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Cherry blossom season changes every year depending on weather temperatures. For 2024 the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival started on March 22nd and went through April 4th. While it is hard to predict far in advance when the festival will be, it is usually around the end of March and early April.

What is the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

The Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is an annual celebration held in Jinhae-gu, a district in Changwon City, South Korea. Renowned as one of the largest cherry blossom festivals in the country. There are two main areas in Jinhae-gu where one can see all of the cherry blossoms. One is Gyeonghwa Station and the second is Yeojwacheon Stream.

Gyeonghwa Station is a famous old station that was originally built in 1939. However, the station is no longer in use. Instead both sides of the tracks are lined with cherry blossom trees giving a perfect backdrop to the station. There is even a train engine from Korail that that you can take your picture with. It is quite a unique experience to walk up train tracks.

The second area, which is considered the main event area, is Yeojwacheon Stream. The stream is lined on both sides by thousands of cherry blossom trees. As visitors stroll along the stream’s walking paths, they are treated to the sight of these natural tunnels, where the branches of the cherry blossom trees intertwine overhead, creating a magical, tunnel-like effect.

Not only are there cherry blossoms, but throughout the streams you can find many art installations. On the sides of the streams you can find many vendors and cultural events going on. While it has always been a popular destination, a recent K-drama was filmed in the area attracting even more visitors.

The second item to remember when flying from Seoul to Busan is that many of these airlines are low-cost carriers. This means that if you want to choose a seat you can expect to pay more, as does luggage fee. I will say most of these airlines offer a more gracious carry-on policy, than the United States. However, if you go overweight or size and have to check a bag, the fees can add up fast.

If you are traveling light and find a great flight deal, I would say that this is a viable option for getting from Seoul to Busan.

How to get to the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

If you have a car, driving to Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is possible. Driving from Seoul is about four and a half hours. If you are staying in Busan it is about an hour drive. Renting cars is not that common for most tourists, so this may be unrealistic depending on your situation.

A second option is to do a tour, this is what I ended up doing. A bus will pick you up in the morning and drive you to Gyeonghwa Station. Here you’ll spend the morning and in the afternoon the bus will bring you to Yeojwacheon Stream. This is probably the easiest if you want a stress free day of seeing cherry blossoms, plus it is relatively affordable. Tours operate from both Busan and Seoul.

Lastly, there is the possibility of using a mixture of buses and trains to reach Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival. From Seoul it is possible to take the KTX most of the way, and then transfer to a bus. Going from Seoul it will take about three and a half hours. When I looked in Busan for myself the only routes I could find included three transfers and over two and a half hours on a bus.

Is the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival Worth Visiting

If you are visiting Busan during the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival you should make plans to attend if it fits in your schedule. Over 300,000 cherry trees burst into bloom, blanketing the city in hues of pink and white during the festival. The sight of countless cherry blossoms in full bloom against the backdrop of historic landmarks and mountains is a sight to behold.

Umbrella art piece

Beyond the mesmerizing display of cherry blossoms, the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival offers a glimpse into South Korea’s rich cultural heritage. From traditional performances and art exhibitions to delectable street food stalls offering a tantalizing array of local delicacies, there’s something to delight every cultural enthusiast. Plus, the delectable food and events in Jinhae are so affordable. Remember to bring cash as some of these vendors do not accept credit cards.

Coming from Seoul it is a little bit more of a difficult decision. The long drive can make it a little unappealing for some. However, if you have the free time and nothing else planned, it is worth visiting from Seoul.

Conclusion: Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival

Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival is not just about admiring the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms; it’s about immersing yourself in a cultural extravaganza, connecting with nature, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Have you visited the Jinhae Cherry Blossom Festival in the past? What was your favorite memory?
